A Valentine to Our Ocean Lovers – and a NEW video!

Love is in the air… and the water! Thanks to your generosity, our Ocean’s creatures have a lot to celebrate this Valentine’s Day.

In December we proposed a challenge: help us raise $5,000 by the end of 2015 and a big-hearted donor would match it. And YOU did it! With your help, we not only met our $5,000 goal, we doubled it, raising $12,156 for our Ocean friends.

Your support will help us love our waterways just a little more, including building eight new Beach Clean Up Stations, complete with new, easy to read signage permanent signage that will last up to 10 years.

Thank you also for helping gather our first ever Beach Clean Up Station trash collection data, reported using our aptly named Trash Collection Data Form. With YOUR input, we now know that our five Golden Gate National Recreation Area Stations alone removed a whopping 340,906 pieces of trash! What a way to show how much you care about our waters — we hope you will keep sending us these little Valentines of information that help us raise more money to love our Ocean. It’s easy – just click here.

Need even more inspiration? Read on for the true story about third-grader and beach cleanup star Sawyer Miller. Plus join AOO at the San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival from March 10th – 13th.

Thank you so much for all of your love and support.

How YOU Can Show a Little Love for our Waters…

Can you do something loving to change the world? Third-grader Sawyer Miller has answered that question with a resounding yes. After his teacher showed him AOO’s website, Sawyer built and installed two Beach Clean Up Stations on the shores of his hometown of Lake Okoboji, Iowa.A new video produced, filmed and directed by AOO volunteer superstar Marcelina Martin documents the many steps of Sawyer’s project. First Sawyer went to the local hardware store to get donated wood. Then he asked the high school shop teacher for help building the Stations. Next Sawyer went to the City Council for permission to put the Stations on the beaches. Finally, Sawyer went to the Okoboji Protective Association for funding. He asked for $150, but made such a compelling case they awarded him $400.

Okoboji Protective Association President Barry Sackett says Sawyer’s Stations are a great example of the “little things all of us can do every day.”

For his part, Sawyer’s already working on his next “little thing”— a campaign against plastic drinking straws in Lake Okoboji restaurants.

Want to follow Sawyer’s lead? Watch the video and then learn how to set up your own beach clean up station!
